Neel-Schaffer is pleased to share that Project Manager Maria Bernard Reid was selected as the Member of the Year for 2025 for the WTS Greater Baton Rouge (LA) Chapter.<\/p>\n

Maria joined Neel-Schaffer this year and has over 25 years of experience in Transportation Planning and NEPA Compliance services. She is based in the firm’s Baton Rouge Office, and even though she has been an active member in the WTS Greater Baton Rouge Chapter for four years she said she was \u201cshocked\u201d to learn she was chosen because many of the services she provides to the chapter are completed away from the spotlight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI take joy in welcoming new members, encouraging the ladies to try new things, and celebrating our accomplishments,” Maria explained. \u201cI\u2019m happiest when helping. I carry what needs to be carried, take lots of photos, and post about how much fun we had after each event.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that’s what makes her a worthy winner of an award that celebrates commitment to and promotion of the WTS mission, said Dishili Young, PE, PTOE, MCE, a Neel-Schaffer colleague and Immediate Past President of the Baton Rouge Chapter.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaria has consistently demonstrated the dedication and initiative of a true leader,\u201d Dishili offered. \u201cShe has never hesitated to step in when needed. She often volunteers without being asked and has filled countless gaps to ensure our chapter thrives. Her contributions span every aspect of our operations, from capturing and sharing event moments via social media, to assisting with event setup and takedown, preparing printed materials, and even handling decorations. There is truly no task too small or too large for Maria\u2019s willingness to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maria said she joined because \u201cWTS is about advancing women and advancing transportation. I’ve never been a delicate princess of a girl, nor have I been super outgoing; however, I\u2019ve never shied away from being the only female in a room, on a team, or in a class, like I was at LSU Forestry, Class of 1998. It\u2019s not that easy for other ladies in Engineering and Transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n

And in 2026, Maria is stepping into a leadership role as the chapter’s Vice President, a role Dishili is sure Maria will thrive in.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaria works quietly behind the scenes, ensuring that every event is a success and that our chapter and its representatives shine,\u201d Dishili said. “Her humility, reliability, and commitment embody the very spirit of WTS. It is an honor to recognize her as Member of the Year and to officially welcome her to the Board!\u201d<\/p>\n
